Sometimes, some people like one mattress more than others – but what happens when you like one mattress but another just as much but you’re not sure what to use? Clue, the hybrid mattress. As you can likely imagine, a hybrid mattress is the best of two or even three worlds combining the technologies of different types of mattresses into one single mattress. In today’s article, we look at what a hybrid mattress is, what it looks like – and why you should invest in one.

What is a Hybrid Mattress

A hybrid mattress typically combines multiple types of mattresses into one. Usually, a hybrid mattress will consist of 2-3 aspects of other mattresses, such as a gel or latex layer, memory foam layer, and pocket springs that will help satisfy people with different needs or who like to experience multiple types of mattresses in one.

These mattresses are layered in specific ways that enable you, as the mattress user, to get the most comfort and support while sleeping through the night. More and more people worldwide are looking into hybrid mattresses and are recommending them to friends and family, but only you can make that decision.

What are Hybrid Mattresses made from

In most cases, hybrid mattresses are made from a few layers, each offering benefits and contributing to the overall comfort and support you want in a mattress. Let’s break down these layers and see what’s inside most hybrid mattresses.

  • Pillow/Support Toppers – Although it may be called a pillow, the top 1-2 inches of your hybrid mattress is often just pure comfort. Although this is not on all hybrid mattresses, most of them will have the option of this extra layer to give you even more comfort.
  • Comfort Layer – The comfort layer on most hybrid mattresses consists of several materials, ultimately where you sleep or what you sleep on. This could be made out of a gel or latex – but more often than not, it is memory foam. This memory foam or comfort layer is typically 3-5 inches of material that can lead to more support and much more comfortable sleep, regardless.
  • Core-Build – The core of most hybrid mattresses is pocket springs. These pocket springs are typically individually wrapped and are highly durable metal springs to prevent sagging but also give your body a firm platform to sleep peacefully and support your body to avoid any back or spine-related pains.
  • Base Layer – The base layer of most mattresses is there to provide some extra damage protection (to the internals of the mattress and the bed frame) but is there to give some stability too. This is usually made from foam, similar to the memory foam on top of the mattress but usually only 1-2 inches.

How firm are Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses are often firm but not as firm as you think. The best way to think about a hybrid mattress (depending on the brand and type of hybrid mattress you get) is that it’s on the line between soft and firm. Innerspring mattresses are typically firm and offer a robust, springy, supportive night’s sleep. Adding the memory foam, usually on a higher layer, can offer the softness and comfortability you’d expect from a memory foam mattress.

Although some people may not like the idea of a firm and soft mattress – this combination is perfect for you. Whilst the inner springs create a rigid platform for you to sleep on that promotes good posture and an even spread of weight – the surrounding feel from the memory foam can offer that comfort that some innerspring mattresses can’t do on their own.

Is a Hybrid Mattress better than a Memory Foam

In most cases, this question comes down to your own opinions. Hybrid mattresses are usually somewhat related to memory foam mattresses from the foam they use on top, if not using gel or silicon, for example. Whilst most memory foam mattresses focus on the very best of comfort, sometimes you may need a little more firmness when you sleep, which is where hybrid mattresses are unique.
